Bird Library is the central library on the SU campus. Current periodicals are located on the second floor, with the periodical archives and other composition, rhetoric, language, linguistics, and English books located on the fifth floor. In addition to the physical resources, the library offers an extensive electronic collection, including full-text journals and several databases. On campus you can access most pages without any special login. From off campus, you'll need your 10 digit SU ID number (that includes the 9 digits you use for most other things, and the very last digit, too.) Online services include Interlibrary Loan requests, book renewal and recall. To renew books online, choose Find Books from the library main page, then choose Patron Info from the Summit catalog page (you'll need your ID number for these services no matter where you log in). If you're teaching, you can also set up a course reserve online. Follow the link under Services from the library main page. Wendy Bousfield is the subject specialist for CCR, The Writing Program, and English. The Subject Guide page she put together gives you a head start in searching through the library's holdings for the information you need. Wendy is also available to assist with research, and especially helpful in finding resources outside the SU system. From the library's main page, the Reference Shelf includes useful online tools like the Oxford English Dictionary Onlne, encyclopedias, other dictionaries, citation guides, news services, directories, maps, and other useful information. The Hot Links option even gives you a quick link to the Internet Movie Database. You'll also find links to local information to help get you acquainted with Syracuse. Browse around...it's a good electronic resource. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships has information specific to graduate students. For a quick look at what's going on around campus, or to find event dates or see the academic calendar, try the Calendars & Schedules page. It includes sports, holidays, Special Collections and other exhibits, lectures, performances, and events by college. More services have been added to MySlice. In addition to enrollment and grade information, MySlice now includes a link to let you set up a SuperCard account. What is that, you ask? The Supercard account is a debit account you set up that allows you to purchase food at campus eateries, including The Inn Complete (but not including People's Place, which is student run and not part of the campus food system). Some vending machines now accept SuperCard. Not only is it convenient, but Supercard purchases are not subject to NY state sales tax, so you save money. The Graduate School oversees academic policy and graduate certification. Professional Development programs, including special seminars, workshops, the Future Professoriate Program and the Preparing Future Faculty program are also coordinated through the Graduate School. |
